Lice don’t follow a season, which means prevention should be part of your regular routine. We recommend keeping a lice comb in each bathroom and doing a quick comb-through on wet hair once a week—think of it like brushing teeth, just one more healthy habit! Spritzing a little mint spray before heading out the door can also help keep those critters away.

What Are Head Lice?
- Lice: The head louse, or Pediculus hummus capitis, is a small, wingless insect that lives on the human scalp. They feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the scalp to maintain their body temperature.
- Life Cycle: Head lice come in 3 stages: Egg (often called a nit), nymph and adult. Adults lay eggs/nits, which attach firmly to hair shafts. Nits hatch in about 7-10 days, leading to a new generation of lice if not treated promptly.
- Transmission: Lice can only move by crawling, making direct head-to-head contact the primary mode of transmission.

How Do They Spread?
- They’re picky roommates: Lice can’t survive off a head for more than 24 hours, and after 12 hours, they’re too weak to eat, spread, or reproduce.
- Mostly by direct head contact. Think hugs, selfies, and sleepovers.
- Less than 2% of cases come from hats, brushes, or headbands.

- Blood Type Specific: Lice commit to one blood type. If they switch, they’ll die after feeding – but a female can still lay eggs, and her babies will adapt to the new host.
- Only about half of people itch from lice – it’s actually an alelrgy to their saliva!

This resistance is due to genetic mutations over time that have rendered traditional chemical treatments ineffective. ✓ Truth: Lice prefer clean hair! Personal hygiene has no impact. It does NOT mean you or your home are dirty!
Myth: Lice can jump from head to head
✓ Truth: Lice can only crawl; they need direct head-to-head contact to spread. They CANNOT fly, jump, or swim. They also ONLY live on humans (your pets are safe!).
Myth: You need to throw away all bedding and toys
✓ Truth: You do NOT need to throw away all bedding or toys. Standard washing is sufficient. Helpful tip for those favorite stuffies that they sleep with -> toss them in the dryer on medium heat for 30 minutes and they’ll be ready for snuggles in no time!

Regular Screening
Conduct head checks whenever you’re worried or have had a known exposure at school, camp, daycare, etc. NOTE – it’s HARD to see nits and even live lice so call us any time you’re concerned to schedule a head check!

Keep long hair tied back. Think of it like protecting the castle (aka your head) by pulling up the drawbridge so those lice can’t walk over to your head!

Common Questions About Lice
How can I tell if my child has lice?
Visually check your child’s hair for evidence of lice or their nits. We recommend everyone own a quality lice comb; The Terminator Comb is the most effective one on the market. (Just be sure if you don’t get it from us that it has 4 colored rubber grips or otherwise it’s a knockoff). Part the hair in small sections and carefully go through each section. If you aren’t sure don’t worry… you are NOT alone. We can’t tell you how many parents and nurses don’t detect lice, especially if your child is in the early stages. Eek!! I just got "the call" - my kid has lice. What do I do?
We get it and realize what we’re about to say is easier said than done, but first, take a deep breath and don’t panic. We know you’ve likely got the urge to treat ASAP, but the truth is, by the time your child shows symptoms of lice, they’ve likely had it for a couple of weeks. All family members in the household should be checked for lice. Call or text us to schedule a treatment.
We have lice. What about my house? I’ve heard I have to wash everything, take down my drapes, vacuum every square inch of my house and bag or throw away their stuffed animals. HELP!
A louse cannot live off a human head for more than 24 hours as they depend on human blood for survival. Thus, your focus should be on removing the lice from your child’s head – call us and we’ll take it from here! All family members of the child should be checked for lice.
As for the home, wash the child’s bedding and clothes they wore the last 24 hours. Any stuffed animals they had head contact with can be tossed in the dryer (30 minutes on high heat). For combs & hairbrushes, remove any hair in them, place in a ziplock bag, and put in the freezer for 3-4 hours. You can also soak them in hot water (130F) for 5-10 minutes. As for the drapes – leave them. Plus, let’s be real… re-hanging those things is a giant pain! If vacuuming the house or furniture gives you peace of mind, go for it, but it’s not necessary for your home to be lice-free!
Can’t I just treat lice at home on my own?
We wish there was a magic cure-all solution, but the fact is, there isn’t. Many over-the-counter and even some prescription lice treatments have potentially dangerous side effects or are simply ineffective.
When it comes to lice, most treatment options contain pesticides OR they are lengthy “natural” treatments that require multiple treatments over multiple weeks that make them very hard for families to keep up with. Not to mention, we’ve tried these and believe us, they are MESSY!
Sadly, the overuse of chemical insecticides have also led to “Super Lice” (aka resistant lice), making the treatments ineffective. See this study for more information (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24724296/)
Where did I get lice?
You’ll likely never know. We know it can feel embarrassing, but an important question to ask is who might have gotten it from you? If you have lice, it’s crucial to let those whom you’ve had close contact with know. As a leading lice expert, Katie Shepherd always says, “Be a friend, tell a friend.” There’s nothing worse than you treating your lice AFTER you’ve unknowingly passed it to a friend. Then, because they didn’t know, they pass it BACK to you and you’re back to square one! Think of those whom you have regular contact with – siblings, best friend, cousins, those who sit next to you at school/work.
No one is immune to lice (rich, poor, old or young). It does NOT mean you’re dirty or have poor hygiene. In fact, lice actually prefer clean hair! PS. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wash your hair though! Good hygiene is still important! 🙂
Once we get rid of the lice, how can we prevent this from happening again?
Pulling the hair back is super important. This makes it harder for lice to climb into your (or your child’s) hair. We also recommend getting a good lice comb and running it through your hair once a week. Our favorite comb is the Terminator Comb. (We sell them so just reach out to us! You can also buy them on Amazon, but be aware there are many knockoffs that don’t work as well, even though they say “Terminator Comb”)
Be aware of signs/symptoms of head lice such as itching, swollen glands or a rash at the back of the neck.
